Situated only 45 minutes north of Pretoria on the N1 Highway, Sondela Nature Reserve has been a popular bushveld getaway for many years and the resort is adding a new edition to their fast growing sports offering with the Sondela Sprint MTB Duathlon, presented by ASG on 2 and 3 June this year.
The stunning surroundings at Sondela offer a perfect environment for an off-road Duathlon with more than 80km of fast single track trails to choose from. The weekend will see the hosting of four different duathlon events which are structured around catering for the entire family.
Event Location
Sondela boasts stunning facilities as well as ample parking right next to the start/finish area.
The event will start and finish inside the Sondela caravan park and riders will be able to use all the neat ablution facilities when they attend the event. Toilets and showers are 50 metres from the start finish area and there at least 8 toilets for both men and women.
Numerous vendors will sell all sorts of eats and drinks and a beer garden will provide the necessary post-race hydration for riders after their trip amongst the wonderful bushveld surroundings.
In the main event on Sunday, 3 June, two Duathlons are on offer
8:00: Super Sprint Duathlon (ages 16 – up; 2.4km run / 10km MTB / 1.4km run)
9:45: Sprint Duathlon (5km run / 22km MTB / 2.4km run)
The mountain bike course is made up of mostly single track and it’s all on smooth and fast riding terrain. It's exhilarating with the total ascent on the 22km less than 60 metres.
It really is an experience to behold and the perfect winter ride to keep the legs going.
The off-road running legs are just as fast and Duathletes will spot various game species, including Warthog, Impala, Zebra, Wildebeest, Nyala and Eland and they'll be hydrated by vibrant staff at the sponsored waterpoints on the route.
Saturday Duathlons (kid’s events) 2 June
11:00 Kiddies race (ages 4-9 years old; only a run/MTB, not a full duathlon) . 2 june
- Distance : 700m run ( around the main road of the caravan park)
- 900m MTB (around the main road of the caravan park, incorporating the BMX track)
8:30 Kiddies Race (ages 10-15) 2 June
- Distance : 1.4km run / 5km MTB / 700m run
This is a full duathlon with all the bells and whistles of the main event on the Sunday
Kids events will be kept close to the start /finish where moms and dads can follow the action. The Caravan Park will be the hub of all the action over the weekend.
The Management of Sondela have insured a carnival atmosphere around the events with Clowns , balloons ,flags and cheering colourful people along the entire route .
Unique water points with kiddies specific products will make the race something to remember. This will be in addition to the number of other events and entertainment on the day.
